Stress in the workplace is something that has a negative impact on both individuals and the companies that they work for. 

In fact, over 11 million working days are lost per year in the UK due to stress, which is why it is integral that employers do all they can to try to reduce this.

There are a number of ways for employers to achieve this, most of which are linked to ensuring that your employees come to work motivated and prepared to do a great job. 

Some of the most common factors that can lead to stress at work include being given an unmanageable workload, feeling that you have no support, and being given repetitive tasks that come with very little job satisfaction. 

In being able to spot these concerns in your own workforce, you can take steps to ensure that everyone working in your company feels that their health and wellbeing is a priority, and here are some simple ways that you can achieve this.

Don’t think that there is a bigger workplace stressor than not knowing what I’m doing. Whether this is because you are unsure where to start, or haven’t been given clear deadline, not knowing how to use your working day is definitely a cause for concern. 

Luckily, it really isn’t that difficult for line managers - simply check in with employees throughout the week to ensure that they know what is expected of them and to ask whether there’s anything they’re struggling with. 

In a perfect world, employees would come to you with any issues or questions that they have, but due to pride, embarrassment, or worrying that it might be a waste of time, this might not always be the case. By making the effort to have catch-ups, you can iron out any concerns and show that you care.

A comfortable workspace reduces stress at work

It might seem like a simple thing, but if employees don’t have a comfortable workspace they’re going to find it very difficult to work to the best of their ability – which is a stressor in itself. This is also true if they don’t have the tools required to carry out their work efficiently. 

If your employees sit at a desk all day, it is advisable that you carry out regular desk checks to ensure that their set-up enables them to sit comfortably.

Another great way to reduce stress in the workplace is to encourage employees to go for a walk on their lunchbreak. 

Personally, I feel far more alert and refreshed coming back to my desk after a brisk power walk halfway through the afternoon, as I find that staying indoors and staring at a screen can make me feel even more sluggish. Light exercise is proven to raise endorphins, so your workforce is sure to be happier after a good stroll.

A little reward here and there can often be the perfect way to make your team feel appreciated, which will lower the chance of them feeling stressed at work. 

Recognition for their efforts shows that you support them, and work perks and employee benefits offer the perfect way to say thank you for all that they do to make your company a success, plus you’ll benefit from higher employee engagement too.

There are lots of different employee benefits and work perks that you could choose from, and the most viable option will depend on the type of company you work for. However, discounts on top brands and leisure activities, an early finish, or the offer of a delicious lunch are sure to go down well! 

Although you may not feel like spending money is the best way to show your appreciation, employee benefits really don’t need to cost that much, and your team are sure to consider thoughtful work perks as a reason to stay within and job and work to the best of their ability.
