While the Festive period is all about the good times, it can also be an incredibly stressful time.  December is a busy month - both socially and in the workplace - if you’re looking at your calendar for the month and feeling frazzled, worry not, as we’ve put together some tips on how to avoid getting burnt out this December.

What is Burnout and Why is it So Bad?

Ever feel like you’ve got too much to do and not enough time to do it in? Exhausted but you still push on? That’s what we refer to as burnout. Basically, it’s when your mind and body are pushed to the limit, but you don’t let yourself have a break. Ironically, it’s the most counter-productive thing that can happen to any of us.

Burnout destroys our capacity to work and means that we operate nowhere near our full potential. Our body and mind have a certain capacity to perform, and when we keep burning energy that we don’t have, that capacity diminishes.

How to Prevent Burnout

First and foremost, the best way to avoid burnout is to stop putting things off and wasting time.  If you have something to do - do it. Finish what you’re working on instead of spending an hour on YouTube (we won’t tell your boss, don’t worry) and then you can enjoy a festive evening with friends after work without worrying about what’d be facing you when you arrive in the office the next day.

Another big thing - and it’s something that we’re all guilty of - is learning to say no. Don’t over-commit yourself. Whether it be an unrealistic deadline at work, a party invite or just meeting a friend for coffee, if something is unrealistic or you don’t want to do something, just say no. Even the most productive person in the world can’t do everything, and you can’t do everything that comes your way.

Finally, take some time out to relax. In our benefits portal, we offer discounts on hundreds of relaxation treatments, spa days and days out to help you switch off and focus on yourself. If you're an existing Staff Treats member, head over to the portal and claim the discounts. To join Staff Treats simply sign up, or book a demo with one of our team members.

If you want to get more done, managing your time only goes so far. It’s important that if you want to increase your levels of productivity you also need to learn how to manage your energy. Learn to say no to things that aren’t important, and take care of your basic needs first.
